Burnside Bridge, also known as Lower Bridge, or Rohrbach's Bridge
played a key role in the Battle of Antietam in the American Civil War.
Built in 1836 by local farmers, this bridge is made of limestone and granite
found naturally in this area of Maryland.
The U.S. government now owns the bridge and the adjacent land
as part of the Antietam National Battlefield.
Foot traffic is still allowed over the bridge and
it is one of the most photographed bridges of the Civil War.
