Charging Foul | Harford County Sports Photography

{post 22•365}

If you are a non-sports fan, or specifically, a non-basketball fan,
you may think the title of this post is referring to some sort of
shopping faux pas involving your credit card ;)
If you are sports fan like me,
you might have realized I am referring to a basketball foul
that is quite difficult for a defensive player to get called
on an offensive player.

I was excited to capture the moment this weekend when
my son was able to "pull a charging foul" from the offensive player
by planting his feet firmly in a defensive stance and remaining still
as the ball handler illegally plowed into him (knees to waist and all).
The reason this foul is so difficult to get called is because the typical reaction from a human
is to slide one's feet to lessen the blow when another human is hurling themselves at you.
Protection and self-preservation, it turns out, is the instinct of mankind.
But, alas, sliding one's foot in a protective mode will not help your cause
in basketball as doing this will instead cause the ref to call a blocking foul on you
instead of on the charging offensive player!
So, the name of the game is to be stoic, still, and when slammed into,
fall like an ancient tree straight to the hardwood gymnasium floor.
You know,
act like a tree, not a human.

A full angle shot to appreciate perspective of where the basket was:

And a cropped shot to better appreciate the blow to the upper body ;)

To see the other two shots in this series
(my son falling to the floor)
check on Nine Acres Designs on Facebook sometime today.
And check back tomorrow to see a few more shots I grabbed from the game this weekend as well.

  1. Midge perfected drawing a charge. I think her total was 11 her last season of high school ball. Once she hit the floor and began convulsing- it's the only time I ran onto the court when she was injured (and she was injured many times). Luckily she had the wind knocked out of her and was struggling to pull in air and panicking. College level doesn't see much of that though.
